Committee forwards slate of appointees to Office of Early Care and Education advisory committee

The Rules Committee on April 5 recommended a slate of appointments to the Office of Early Care and Education Advisory Committee and will forward the nominations as a committee report to the full Board.

Chair Aaron Peskin summarized nominees and thanked applicants; Monica Walters, CEO of WUI Children's Services, spoke briefly about her experience running Head Start programs and said she would advocate to steward incoming local and federal funds and close equity gaps for Black, brown and English-language learners.

Public commenters including Beverly Malugen (representing C5 Children's School and CPAC) and Naima Charles (Children's Council/SFDC Advocacy Coalition) urged the committee to approve the CPAC‑backed slate, saying the nominees would help ensure Prop funds are spent consistent with community priorities during and after the pandemic.

Chair Peskin moved to recommend Patricia Sullivan (seat 6), June Lynn Arlo (seat 8, no residency waiver required), Monica Walters (seat 7, with residency waiver) and Sarah Hicks Kilday (seat 9, with residency waiver). After correcting an earlier misspeaking, the clerk restated the motion and the committee voted unanimously to forward the appointments to tomorrow's Board meeting.
