Committee advances redistricting task force ordinance with language‑access and meeting‑frequency amendments

The Rules Committee on June 7 voted to send to the full Board of Supervisors an ordinance convening a nine‑member redistricting task force and adding a Form 700 filing requirement for task force members, along with amendments addressing removal authority, meeting frequency and language access funding.

Chair Aaron Peskin described the task force composition — three members appointed by the Board, three by the Elections Commission and three by the mayor — and said the city must prepare despite a delayed federal census. The committee adopted amendments to specify that members serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority and may be removed by that authority; require the task force to hold a regular meeting at least once a month after its inaugural meeting; and obligate funding so that meetings and outreach meet the city's Language Access Ordinance (Admin Code chapter 91), including interpretation services if requested 48 hours in advance and translation of notices and materials.

Lauren Girardin of the League of Women Voters urged rapid passage and asked for a public timeline and additional translations beyond the minimum. The clerk’s office described its role in clerking, noticing and working with partners to deliver translations and outreach. The committee adopted the amendments and forwarded the amended ordinance to the full board with a positive recommendation.
