Rules Committee recommends Mac Carter Oberstone for Police Commission

The Rules Committee unanimously adopted an amendment to the nomination resolution and voted to send the mayor's nominee, Mac Carter Oberstone, to the full Board with a recommendation.

Carter Oberstone told the panel he has worked on policing policy as a fellow at the Policing Project at NYU Law and in appellate litigation. "If confirmed, I pledge to apply these same principles in carrying out the commission's important work," he said, emphasizing evidence-based policy and impartial adjudication of disciplinary matters.

Multiple callers spoke in support. Jason Crockett said he had known the nominee for 18 years and praised his preparation and love for the city; Erin Liotta, a former clerk, called Carter Oberstone "one of the smartest people I know" and highlighted his integrity; Cara Sandberg and Michael Mongan also endorsed his nomination and urged committee approval.

Chair Aaron Peskin moved to delete the words "rejecting" and "reject" from the draft and the committee adopted the amendment without objection. The committee then voted to forward the amended nomination to the full Board with a recommendation. The clerk recorded unanimous 'aye' votes on the motions.

The nomination will appear on the Board of Supervisors' agenda for confirmation.
