Rules Committee continues surveillance and security camera ordinance for further edits

The Rules Committee continued consideration of an ordinance that would approve the city's use of certain surveillance and security cameras across departments, including Recreation and Parks, Elections and Airport systems.

Chair Aaron Peskin said he had circulated substantive amendments that required additional review; Deputy City Attorney Anne Pearson said the amendments circulated that morning were based on an outdated draft and that a new version had been sent to supervisors. The committee decided the changes were substantive and required a continuance. The committee received no in-person or phone public comment on Item 5 during the session and voted to continue the item to the Oct. 31 meeting to allow the revised draft to circulate and for additional public review.

Chair Peskin noted an email from a member of the public raising concerns related to Recreation and Parks' use of a location-management system for tennis-court reservations as an example of why the technology requires careful review.

What happens next: The ordinance will return to Rules Committee on Oct. 31 with the revised draft and any additional public comment; the committee did not adopt the ordinance on Oct. 10.
