Committee continues SFMTA nominee review after questions about seat qualifications

The Rules Committee on Oct. 31 continued consideration of the mayor’s nomination of Gloria Lee to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Board, saying supervisors wanted additional information about which seat specifications the nomination is intended to satisfy.

Chair Peskin noted the charter requires certain seat qualifications but the mayor’s letter did not specify which seat or which required specification (for example, regular Muni riders or directors with professional transportation experience). Deputy City Attorney Anne Pearson said the committee could seek clarification from the SFMTA administrator and the Clerk’s Office to determine whether the board currently meets the charter’s required mix of qualifications. Clerk Victor Young said he would check with the board administrator.

The nominee, who identified herself as Gloria Lee, described her neighborhood ties and civic work, including work on Transbay and the Temporary Terminal, advocacy for wayfinding in multiple languages, founding a neighborhood group during COVID, and experience as a district liaison in the state Board of Equalization office. Lee said she used Muni frequently before COVID and outlined priorities including transit safety and better language access. Supervisor Connie Chan said she had spoken with Lee and thanked her interest but raised concerns about whether other candidates with longer direct transit experience might better fill the role. After public comment both supporting and questioning the nominee, the committee voted to continue the nomination to the call of the chair so supervisors can confirm seat specification details and potentially interview the nominee in person upon her return to the United States.
