The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee on March 20 forwarded multiple committee and commission appointments to the full Board and handled public comment on several nominations.
Vice Chair Shimon Walton moved to refer a slate of nominations for the Sugary Drink Distribution Tax Advisory Committee (SDDTAC). The slate forwarded to the full Board included Chester Williams (seat 1), Anuya (seat 2), Marna Armstead (seat 3), Frances Abigail "Abby" Cabrera (seat 4), Jamie Schmidt (seat 5), Linda Yee (seat 6, youth seat), Eva Holman (seat 15) and Laura Urban (seat 16). Public testimony supporting diversity in appointments came from Lyfe Young of Shape Up San Francisco, who urged the committee to ensure representation for communities most impacted by sugary‑beverage‑related disease. The committee also approved a residency waiver for Chester Williams before forwarding the slate; Walton, Safaie, and Dorsey recorded aye votes and the motion passed without objection.
Item 3 considered appointments to the Food Security Task Force. Nominees Austin Delmaso (seat 12), Earl Campbell Barbee (seat 13) and Jade Kizon (seat 15) were recommended to the Board after public support from Glide (represented by Wes Savers). Walton made the motion and the committee voted unanimously to forward the recommendations and include a residency waiver where requested.
On the Ethics Commission appointment (item 4), the committee continued the matter to the call of the chair because the candidate was not present; public callers urged reappointment but the committee unanimously approved the continuance.
For the Public Works Commission (item 5), the committee recommended Gerald Demarcus Turner for appointment. Turner described close to 20 years of public‑service work and housing development experience, and Lauren Post, chair of the Public Works Commission, and other callers urged his appointment. The committee voted to forward Turner’s nomination to the full Board with a positive recommendation.
Each of these items will appear on the Board agenda for consideration as committee reports.
