Rules Committee recommends Frederick Martin for African American Reparations Advisory Committee seat

On April 17, 2023, the Rules Committee voted unanimously to recommend Frederick Martin for Seat 15 of the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee and to forward the appointment to the full Board.

Vice Chair Shimon Walton moved the committee's recommendation after a series of applicant presentations. Frederick Martin described work with tenant organizing, HUD-funded housing-rights efforts and subcommittee participation focused on housing and economic empowerment. He told the committee he had attended many reparations committee meetings and outlined his experience organizing tenants to preserve affordable units.

Other applicants who spoke included Fatima Abdul Kalik, Larry Martin, Shacama Stoney, Tianna Danielle Blunt and Tatiana White, each describing personal or professional ties to the Black community and reparations work. Committee members thanked applicants and urged those not selected to remain engaged with the work.

The clerk recorded a unanimous roll call recommending Frederick Martin (Walton aye; Safai aye; Dorsey aye). The recommendation will be considered by the full Board as an appointment to the advisory committee.
