Supervisors back sidewalk plaques to mark Leather and LGBTQ history in SoMa

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on April 5 voted to forward a resolution authorizing the installation of Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District history plaques across South of Market, sending the measure to the full Board with a positive recommendation.

Honey Mahogany, speaking for Supervisor Matt Haney’s office, described the district’s historical role as a global center of leather culture and detailed collaboration with neighborhood stakeholders, Soma West CBD and the Department of Public Works to place plaques and arrange maintenance. She said the cultural district has negotiated funding to cover plaque costs and is coordinating placement as part of planned street work.

Multiple callers representing the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District and affiliated businesses urged support. David Hyman (board member) said the plaques will “help the remaining businesses and civic organizations that call South Of Market their physical and spiritual home to survive and rebuild.” Bob Goldfarb (Leather Cultural District president) and others highlighted SoMa’s global significance and the risk of cultural displacement.

Supervisor Peskin offered a cosponsorship and the committee moved to forward the item as a committee report. The motion passed on a 3–0 roll call.

The resolution will be considered by the full Board; the clerk noted items acted upon are expected to appear on the Board agenda of April 13 unless otherwise stated.
