Committee tables two DHS parole‑entry ordinances after DA requests delay

The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee on March 9, 2023 tabled two ordinances (Items 4 and 5) that would have authorized the District Attorney and Sheriff to enter into agreements with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to facilitate parole entry of two criminal defendants for prosecution in San Francisco.

Chair Supervisor Catherine Stephanie said she had spoken with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, who requested the items be tabled after meeting with victims and community leaders. The DA, Chair Stephanie said, affirmed support for the city's sanctuary policy while indicating she is working with federal authorities to expedite apprehension and extradition in the two cases. Vice Chair Angadio emphasized that maintaining sanctuary-city protections encourages undocumented residents to report crimes and urged DHS to extradite the individuals without changing local policy.

With no public comment, Chair Stephanie moved to table both ordinances; the committee recorded unanimous 'aye' votes and no opposition. The items will not advance at this time per the DA's request.
