Committee approves plan to rename Visitation Valley street for Ruth Jackson

The Land & Transportation Committee on March 21 voted to advance a resolution to rename a street in Visitation Valley to honor educator and community leader Ruth Jackson.

President Walton, who introduced the item, said the measure responds to community requests to commemorate Jackson’s decades of neighborhood service and mentoring. "Miss Jackson made a huge impact in Visitation Valley and always stressed the importance of working hard daily, getting an education, preparing for a career pathway, and contributing to her community," Walton said during the meeting.

The clerk described the item as a resolution to rename a portion of a street in Visitation Valley; Walton’s remarks referenced changing a street name in the same neighborhood to recognize Jackson’s family and community contributions. There were no public commenters on the item during either in-person or remote public comment.

An unidentified committee member moved to approve the resolution "with recommendations." Roll call recorded Supervisors Aaron Peskin, Dean Preston and Mirana Melgar voting "aye," and the motion passed with three ayes. The resolution will be transmitted to the Board of Supervisors and is expected to appear on the March 22 agenda.

The committee did not record any amendments or technical changes on the floor; next steps are formal placement on the full Board agenda for final action.
