Committee backs renaming of Hahn Street block to Miss Jackson Way after resident objections

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Transportation Committee voted June 6 to send to the full Board a resolution renaming the middle block of Hahn Street — between Visitation Avenue and Sunnydale Avenue — to Miss Jackson Way, with post-passage directives to Public Works, the Municipal Transportation Agency and the county surveyor.

President Shamann Walton, sponsor of the resolution, told the committee the renaming had been a community request predating Ruth Jackson’s passing and that the office had conducted outreach; the resolution includes language requiring dual signage (the new name with Hahn in parentheses) for five years. Walton said the office will work with constituents to mitigate address-change burdens.

Several in-person residents urged the committee not to proceed. Laura Barber said she felt confused that signage and city officials appeared to have already proceeded and asked why opponents were asked to speak if the change was effectively decided. Other residents, including Hazel Longino and another longtime Hahn Street resident, said most households on the block are seniors and that changing addresses would impose time-consuming costs (updating mortgage papers, doctor records, bank accounts, state IDs).

Supervisor Eric Peskin noted the order includes the standard five-year dual-name period; Chair Myrna Melgar asked for a motion to send the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation. Supervisors Peskin, Dean Preston and Melgar voted aye; the motion passed.

Next steps: the committee forwarded the resolution as a committee report to the full Board for consideration on the Board agenda (scheduled by the clerk unless otherwise noted).
