Committee backs commemorative plaques for San Francisco Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District

The Land Use & Transportation Committee on Oct. 3 voted to forward a resolution recommending commemorative sidewalk plaques and related markers to recognize the history and contributions of the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District in South of Market.

Supervisor Mirna Melgar introduced the item and recognized Bob Goldfarb, executive director of the Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District, who told the committee the community dates to the mid‑1960s in SoMa and that gentrification has reduced the number of venues from more than 40 in 1980 to about 11 today. Goldfarb and other supporters said sidewalk plaques, a leather history cruise and additional markers would preserve local history and help attract visitors while honoring marginalized communities.

Multiple supporters from the district and allied groups testified in person, describing art and mural work, refurbishing of Ringgold Alley, and the importance of a physical marker to keep the neighborhood’s history visible. After public comment Supervisor Melgar moved to send the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the committee voted unanimously to forward the item for Board consideration on Oct. 18.
