Committee designates century‑old coast redwood at 313 Scott St a landmark tree

The Land Use & Transportation Committee voted unanimously on Oct. 3 to forward an ordinance that would designate a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) at 313 Scott Street as a landmark tree.

Supervisor Dean Preston introduced the item and said the Urban Forestry Council had evaluated the tree’s rarity, physical characteristics and cultural value and recommended landmark status. A caller speaking for homeowner Douglas Durkin recounted restoration efforts, described neighborhood enjoyment of the tree and said the specimen may date to Panama‑Pacific International Exposition plantings.

The committee voted 3–0 to forward the ordinance with a positive recommendation to the full Board. The designation will preserve the tree under the public works code provisions governing landmark trees.
