Committee continues Castro Theatre landmark amendment amid divided public comments

An ordinance proposing amendments to the landmark designation for the Castro Theatre generated extensive public comment and was continued for two weeks to allow further negotiation.

Supporters — including cultural-history advocates and local groups — urged the committee to preserve fixed orchestra seating and interior features to protect the theater’s historic integrity. Speakers argued that maintaining original seating is essential for film programming and the venue’s acoustics. Opponents and some nearby residents warned that fixing seating could limit future modernization such as HVAC upgrades and flexible programming and stressed the need for economic viability.

Several callers and members of the public raised concerns about contract issues related to Another Planet Entertainment and the Graham Auditorium, calling for fuller disclosure and more time to resolve outstanding questions. In light of the sustained public interest and community disagreement, Supervisor Preston moved to continue the item two weeks to May 9 to allow additional negotiation and information gathering; the committee voted 3–0 to continue.

Next steps: The committee directed additional outreach and negotiation among stakeholders and asked the sponsor and staff to return with updated language or clarifying information before the May 9 meeting.
