Committee approves street names for Balboa Reservoir, renames Lee Avenue for Mayor Edwin M. Lee

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on May 1 voted to send two street‑naming resolutions for the Balboa Reservoir development to the full Board with positive recommendations.

Chair Supervisor Myrna Melgar described the Balboa Reservoir project as a major West‑side housing development that will add about 1,100 units with roughly 50% affordability, including a building dedicated to educators and a planned performing arts center for City College. As part of community outreach, AvalonBay proposed street names; one proposal renames an existing Lee Avenue segment and applies the new name to a future right‑of‑way as Mayor Edwin M. Lee Avenue, with bilingual signage including Chinese characters.

Andrew Sun, appearing for Mayor Lee's family, thanked the supervisors and said the naming honors Lee's advocacy for affordable housing and his legacy. Chair Melgar acknowledged the Lee family and said the naming recognizes his role as San Francisco's first Chinese‑American mayor.

After brief public comment and no questions from colleagues, the committee moved to forward both Item 2 (renaming Lee Avenue) and Item 3 (approving Diego Lane, Loquat Lane, Mayer Lane and Wisteria Lane within the Balboa Reservoir project) to the full Board. Supervisors Aaron Peskin, Dean Preston and Myrna Melgar voted aye and the motions passed. The items will appear on the Board calendar for May 9.
