The Land Use & Transportation Committee voted Dec. 4 to recommend initiation of the landmark designation process for Greg Angelo's Velocity Arts & Entertainment at 225 San Leandro Way.
Supervisor Melgar introduced the resolution and described the site as a unique arts venue in District 7. Presenters and a large public turnout of artists and longtime collaborators provided testimony about the museum's role employing and training artists, hosting community events, collaborating with cultural institutions, and providing family-friendly and therapeutic programming. Speakers recounted decades of continuous work, international audiences, and programs that support artists and families; many urged the Planning Department to begin formal landmark review to preserve the venue for future generations.
The committee moved to forward the initiation resolution to the full Board as a committee report with a positive recommendation. The motion carried with three ayes.
Next steps: the Planning Department will undertake the formal landmarking process and return with required findings and timelines as part of the standard landmark-review procedure.
