Committee forwards $22.2M in childcare grant increases funded by Prop C

The Budget & Finance Committee voted to forward two resolutions that modify HSA grants to expand early care and education services citywide. Ingrid Mesquita, director of the Office of Early Care and Education, said the amendments would support roughly 4,500 children by subsidizing childcare across family‑based and center‑based settings.

The Budget and Legislative Analyst summarized that the Children's Council amendment increases that grant by approximately $17 million to a revised not‑to‑exceed total of about $393.7 million and that the Wu Yi amendment increases funding by about $5.2 million to a revised total of about $81 million; both are funded with Proposition C commercial‑tax revenues. BLA noted average subsidy and stipend levels used in budgeting.
