Committee clears DOJ grants for community policing, vests and accepts naloxone gift

The committee advanced three retroactive resolutions that would allow the Police Department to accept federal grant funding and an in‑kind naloxone donation.

Patrick Leung, chief financial officer for the San Francisco Police Department, described the COPS office microgrant (~$125,000) to support community policing development activities, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership (~$123,000) to purchase vests for multiple public‑safety agencies, and an in‑kind donation of 900 naloxone units (approximate value $66,000) from a state naloxone distribution program.

Supervisors asked for detail about which juvenile probation staff use vests and the number required; Leung said partner agencies submit metrics and that the city compiles figures but he could not speak in detail about juvenile probation’s specific orders. He also said the city’s application collates each participating agency’s submitted needs and transmits a combined city application to the grant program.

There were no public speakers on these items. The Committee voted to forward the three resolutions to the full Board with a positive recommendation (three ayes).
