Committee backs 5‑year extension of sheriff’s lease at 1740 Folsom

The Budget and Finance Committee on Sept. 28 unanimously recommended that the full Board approve a five‑year extension of the sheriff’s lease at 1740 Folsom Street, the site used for the department’s emergency command center, training and background investigations.

Rico Penick, the city’s Director of Real Estate, told the committee the space has housed sheriff operations since 2002 and that the proposed five‑year extension would run July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2027, with a five‑year option thereafter at 95% of fair market value. Penick said the amendment package includes non‑substantive edits — removing a clause about future appropriations and adding the controller’s certification block — and identifies two chartfields to cover space rent.

Nick Menard of the Budget and Legislative Analysts said the office reviewed the site and the appraisal and recommended approval, noting the initial five‑year rent totals approximately $5.8 million and that there is no current capital plan to purchase equivalent space. There were no public speakers on the item.

Chair Supervisor Hillary Ronan moved to accept the Real Estate Division’s amendments; Vice Chair Supervisor Asha Safai and Supervisor Connie Chan recorded aye votes. The committee then voted unanimously to forward the amended resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation.

Next steps: the item will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda for final consideration.
