Committee recommends $538,051 state grant for pipeline to supply recycled water to San Francisco Zoo

The Budget & Finance Committee on Sept. 6 voted to forward to the full Board a resolution approving the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's acceptance and expenditure of a $538,051 grant from the California Department of Water Resources (Prop. 1 funds administered through ABAG) to construct a recycled-water pipeline to the San Francisco Zoo.

SFPUC staff said the grant will fund part of an estimated $2.3 million pipeline project; SFPUC capital funds are expected to provide the balance, including a required cost share. "We have received $538,051 for this project," the PUC presenter said, describing a pipeline to carry recycled water from the West Side recycled water treatment facility to the zoo to replace groundwater use for nonpotable needs such as irrigation and enclosure maintenance.

The department noted the grant period runs through Dec. 31, 2024, with construction anticipated to advertise by the end of the month and construction completion projected in mid-2025. The Budget and Legislative Analyst recommended approval and noted the grant’s matching requirement and the overall project cost estimates.

The committee moved the item forward with a positive recommendation. The full Board will consider the resolution and SFPUC will return as required with contract awards and project updates during procurement and construction.
