The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee on May 15 voted to forward to the full Board a resolution authorizing the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OED) to accept additional federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) formula funds.
OED workforce impact manager Jen Han told the committee the state’s Employment Development Department adjusted formula allocations to local workforce development boards, producing an approximate $1.4 million increase to the city’s existing WIOA award, for a total of about $5.6 million. Han said the funds are noncompetitive formula dollars that will support the city’s job center network, sector training programs and in‑house staff; the award includes 10% direct costs and must be spent by June 30, 2024.
Supervisor Connie Chan asked to be added as a cosponsor and praised OED’s work. There were no public speakers. Chair Chan moved the item to the full Board with a positive recommendation; Vice Chair Rafael Mandelman was recorded absent for that vote. Supervisors Myrna Melgar and Chan voted aye and the motion passed.
The action is procedural: the committee recommended forwarding the item to the Board of Supervisors; the full Board will take the final vote and execute any necessary grant agreements.
