Planning Commission unanimously continues several items, approves consent calendar and elects officers

The San Francisco Planning Commission on Oct. 6 voted unanimously to continue a set of items the department recommended be deferred and approved its consent calendar after a brief recusal was recorded.

Chair Moore opened the meeting and read a list of continuances the department proposed, including multiple hearing dates moved into November and a pair of Castro-related items the planning department asked to synchronize with an upcoming Historic Preservation Commission hearing. Jacob Bentliff, speaking for Supervisor Mandelman, asked the commission to continue the Castro nighttime-entertainment ordinance until after the Historic Preservation Commission acts.

After public comment—including Michael Petrellis urging a sooner hearing—the commission moved and seconded a motion “to continue items as proposed.” The motion passed on a roll-call vote recorded as unanimous, 7 to 0.

On the consent calendar commissioners addressed a conflict of interest: Commissioner Ruiz disclosed that his employer, Chinatown Community Development Center, is associated with item 7 (Grant Avenue) and recused himself from that vote. The commission then approved item 7 on consent and later voted to approve items 6 and 8 (with a late amendment noted for item 8). Those consent actions were recorded as commission votes during the meeting.

Commission matters included the election of officers. Commissioner Diamond nominated Commissioner Tanner as president and Commissioner Moore as vice president through January 2023; that nomination was seconded and approved unanimously, 7 to 0.

The meeting record shows the commission took the recommended scheduling changes, recorded the recusal and consent votes, and completed its internal election before moving on to major project presentations later in the agenda. The continued items will return on the dates announced or after Historic Preservation Commission action as requested.
