Planning commission approves office conversion and landmark repairs at 200 Rhode Island Street

The Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use authorization to convert approximately 22,580 square feet to office use in the Takahashi Building at 200 Rhode Island Street, a recently landmarked site associated with Japanese‑American history.

Planning staff noted the landmark designation had passed final read at the Board of Supervisors and that the conversion would support a broader $25 million rehabilitation effort focused on repairing and restoring the historic exterior and streetscape. The department recommended approval with conditions after review by the historic preservation commission and a historic structures report.

The project sponsor emphasized the building’s significance to the Japanese‑American community and said that modest office conversion would make the rehabilitation economically viable while preserving the property’s character. Planning staff and the commission noted there was no public correspondence opposing the project and the commission voted 5–0 to approve with conditions noted in staff recommendations.

The approval places the item on the consent calendar for finalization of related DNX/CUA case numbers and the project will proceed to design refinement and permitting.
