District reports gains in Latinx student "on-track" rates and outlines recruitment, pathway efforts

District staff updated the San Francisco Board of Education on implementation steps for the December 2019 Latinx resolution, describing cross-department work in professional development, curriculum, student pathways and recruitment.

Chief of Staff Jill Hogan Knight introduced the item; Chief of Student & Family Support detailed coordinated-care implementation and embedded implicit-bias and restorative-practices training. Dr. Nicole Priestley presented college and career readiness work (AVID, early college and CTE), reported that Latinx high school "on-track" rates rose about five percentage points year over year and described a pilot Latinx cohort with dual-enrollment courses in partnership with City College of San Francisco intended to create a local educator pipeline.

Human Resources described recruitment work including outreach to Hispanic-Serving Institutions, the "Latinx Lunis" exam-prep affinity group to help potential candidates pass credentialing exams, and multilingual-pathway information sessions to highlight bilingual teaching opportunities.

Public comment and commissioners welcomed the progress and asked for clarity on costs and metrics. Staff said fiscal impacts had been estimated in the original resolution fiscal analysis and that many activities are being pursued within existing departmental budgets; staff committed to provide follow-up on costs and measurable outcomes.

Next steps: staff plan to launch the advisory committee application this spring, continue recruitment and report on program metrics and fiscal impacts to the board.
