Board approves transfer of 2.2 acres from UC for Mission Bay school after neighborhood support

The San Francisco Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a land-disposition agreement with the University of California to transfer 2.2 acres for a Mission Bay school site, a key step in advancing construction of the project the board previously approved in June.

The superintendent described the agreement as a necessary procedural step following the board’s earlier approval of the Mission Bay project. Don Komunoff, head of facilities (referred to in the meeting as staff lead on facilities), was present to answer questions.

Madison Tam, legislative aide to District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey, spoke on the supervisor’s behalf, saying the supervisor was “in full unequivocal support of the Mission Bay School” and urged the board not to delay. Other neighborhood speakers — including a Potrero Hill boosters leader and residents — said the new school site is needed to serve hundreds of families living in Mission Bay and nearby redeveloping neighborhoods.

Board members thanked facilities staff and city partners, including UCSF and representatives from the mayor’s office of housing and other city agencies, for their work on the transfer. A roll-call vote recorded seven ayes and the board approved the land disposition agreement to allow the district to move forward with site planning and future construction steps.

The action is tied to district projections of growing neighborhood enrollment as housing development continues in Mission Bay and nearby neighborhoods; speakers cited more than 500 current public-school students living in Mission Bay and additional students expected as housing projects complete.

Next steps include continued collaboration between SFUSD facilities staff and city partners on site planning, permitting and scheduling for design and construction.
