San Francisco Board of Education elects new president and vice president for 2024

At the board’s Jan. 9 organizational meeting the San Francisco Board of Education completed the annual election of officers for 2024. Nominations were opened under rules that allow a commissioner to nominate themselves or others without a second.

Vice President Weisman Ward nominated a ticket—recorded in the transcript as Commissioner "Mittomani" for president and Commissioner Alexander for vice president. Both nominees accepted the nominations. Student delegates and several commissioners spoke in support, with student delegates telling the board they had engaged with the nominees and welcomed leadership that had been accessible to students.

Roll-call votes followed. The transcript records that the roll-call for the presidency resulted in recorded affirmative votes and the chair announced the election; Commissioner Alexander was elected vice president in a subsequent roll call recorded as seven yes votes. The newly elected president then chaired the remainder of the meeting.

The organizational process the board followed included a brief period for statements from nominees and a reminder of the board’s rule that a supermajority (five votes) is required to avoid a second organizational meeting if no nominee reaches that threshold.

The board moved promptly from the election into action items, including the academic calendar and compensation items.
