Executive Director Kelly Dearman updated commissioners on ongoing repairs at 6221 Geary, the Felton Institute'owned building that houses the Richmond Senior Center. Dearman said asbestos remediation began in November 2022 and that work expected to take six to eight weeks has continued through 2023 and into 2024, causing major impacts to Richmond Senior Center programs and clients.
Dearman said the landlord, the Felton Institute, has committed to finish the work but that construction and building-inspection delays have slowed progress. "Our office of community partnerships has an analyst assigned to this matter and is talking weekly with Richmond Senior Center leadership, Felton leadership, and property management," she said, and reported that District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan has called for a hearing and that DAS will now receive weekly contractor updates following a budget and finance committee hearing on Jan. 31.
Staff said most services have resumed but some construction remains and that DAS will continue to facilitate conversations among parties and push for completion in the coming two to three months. Commissioners did not take formal action beyond requesting continued updates.
