Member Pantoja, the committee liaison for the 2018 Seawall earthquake safety bond, summarized recent meetings with Port of San Francisco staff and a status update on the seawall program.
Pantoja said the port has identified 23 smaller-scale projects that support the larger seawall program, and that 11 of those projects have been prioritized to begin predesign and planning work. He told the committee that the bond authorized $425,000,000 but that the overall seawall program will require substantially more funding over decades; Pantoja cited an approximate long-range estimate of tens of billions of dollars for the full program.
Pantoja said the port intends to break ground on one or more prioritized projects in 2024, while coordinating closely with building owners and other stakeholders. He also described a living-seawall pilot installation (south of the Ferry Building, just past the AG Building) being conducted in partnership with the Smithsonian; surveys for that two-year study are expected to begin early next year.
The committee thanked the liaison and asked a few clarifying questions about the pilot location and schedule. No committee action was requested at this meeting.
