Department of Building Inspection management presented a multi‑part reform package to the Building Inspection Commission designed to increase transparency, consistency and public confidence.
Assistant Director Christine and Interim Director Patrick O’Reardon outlined reforms that include a refreshed code of conduct, expanded staff training (customer service, equity and people management), records management upgrades (implementation of a Secure Share system to speed secure records access), and modernization of the permit tracking system. For inspections and code enforcement, DBI proposed stricter checks and balances, district‑based inspector assignments, required pre‑inspections for flagged jobs under recently passed enhanced‑quality legislation, additional inspector training, and public tracking of notices of violation.
DBI said it will work with the City Comptroller’s Office, which is conducting a public‑integrity review expected in July, and incorporate any recommendations into an implementation plan and timeline that will return to the commission. Commissioners asked for public, empirical reporting on modular construction outcomes, more detailed permitting timeline metrics, and updates on Abatement Appeals Board scheduling; staff agreed to follow up.
