The Commission on Community Investment and Infrastructure on Dec. 5 unanimously approved an amendment to the Mission Bay South signage master plan to allow a third district sign at the Chase Center site (Thrive City), a public plaza that hosts community events.
Gretchen Heckman, senior development specialist with OCII, said the change is the fourth amendment to the Mission Bay South signage master plan and would add an inward-facing district sign on the gatehouse roof to help direct pedestrians inside the plaza. Heckman said district signs are placemaking devices that carry slogans or mottos and that the amendment includes design specifications and location details.
Yo Yo Murphy, senior vice president of government and community relations for the Warriors, said Thrive City has hosted "over 250 events" since opening and that retail leasing is more than halfway complete, with two restaurants expected in 2024. Murphy said the interim amendment will help wayfinding and placemaking while the Warriors and partners develop a more comprehensive signage update.
Commissioners asked about illumination and scope; staff said the sign's illumination would likely match the site's retail signage and that modifications apply only to Blocks 29 through 32 (the Chase Center site). A motion to approve the amendment carried on a unanimous vote. The action is recorded as Resolution No. 35-2023.
