Subcommittee recommends Brian Caruso for Code Advisory Committee at-large seat

On Feb. 17, 2022, the Building Inspection Commission nomination subcommittee recommended Brian Caruso to fill an at-large vacancy on the Code Advisory Committee, a panel that advises the Department of Building Inspection on code changes.

Caruso, who described himself as "a structural engineer by background" with about 25 years of experience, told commissioners he has worked on projects in the Bay Area including Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island and has a background in modular construction. He said the owner-developer perspective he brings can help the committee consider cost and schedule impacts of code changes early in the process: "bringing that perspective to the front end of the process ... could impact development far less at the tail end," he said.

Wendy Aragon, the other applicant, introduced herself as "an assistant project manager for general contractor in San Francisco" with two decades of experience handling tenant-improvement work and regular interaction with the building department. She said she was recommended by the CAC vice president and cited expertise in annual code changes and disabled-access issues.

A commissioner asked Caruso to clarify possible ties to other firms; Caruso acknowledged collaborative work between his company and other firms on Treasure Island projects but said he was "not currently personally" working with HOK and that his own team was not currently working with HOK. After brief deliberation, Commissioner Tam moved to recommend Caruso, a second was recorded and a roll-call vote was taken; the recommendation carried unanimously.

The recommendation will be transmitted to the Building Inspection Commission for final appointment procedures and public posting as required.
