Building Inspection Commission approves remote subcommittee rules, several committee appointments and teleconference findings

The San Francisco Building Inspection Commission on Wednesday approved a series of procedural motions that included adopting AB 361 findings to allow remote attendance, authorizing subcommittees and third‑party presenters to meet or appear remotely, and confirming several committee appointments.

The commission adopted the AB 361 findings to permit teleconference attendance under the modified Brown Act procedures. "Motion," a commissioner said, and the roll call resulted in the motion carrying.

On subcommittee operations, the commission debated logistics, Brown Act constraints on hybrid meetings and room availability before voting unanimously to allow subcommittees to meet remotely as a baseline to encourage attendance and volunteerism.

Commissioners also voted unanimously to permit third‑party presenters and members of the public to call in remotely, with a motion from Commissioner Epler and a second by Vice President Tam.

On appointments, the nominations subcommittee recommended Brian Caruso for an at‑large seat on the Code Advisory Committee. After disclosures and discussion about potential industry ties, the commission approved Caruso's nomination by a 5–1 roll call vote; Mr. Caruso later took the oath of office. The commission also moved and approved reappointments of Alice Brown and Walter Parks to Access Appeals Commission seats for persons with disabilities; those reappointments carried unanimously.

Other personnel and committee motions — including appointments to nominations and client services subcommittees — were approved by roll call with unanimous support.

Meeting minutes from prior meetings were approved after a correction to a misspelled attendee name, and the commission adjourned at 11:12 a.m.
