Building Inspection Commission approves rule changes, creates Client Services' subcommittee

The Building Inspection Commission voted unanimously to adopt amendments to its rules and bylaws at the Oct. 2021 meeting, approving changes that included deleting a section referring to court reporters, renumbering a formatting error in the procedures, and adding the term "task forces" to section 2.05 to clarify subordinate-body appointments.

Commissioners also moved to create and adopt the name for a new subcommittee focused on service delivery. Vice President Tam made the motion to adopt the name "Client Services," which passed by roll call with all commissioners voting yes.

Commissioner Beto read a proposed mission statement on behalf of the subcommittee emphasizing three focus areas: plan check and permitting; inspection; and automation and technology. Commissioners debated whether the term "client" should include end users such as tenants and residents; the majority said the term can be interpreted broadly and requested the secretary circulate a written mission statement and an organizational chart for feedback.

Deputy City Attorney Rob Capela advised commissioners that task forces are not currently defined in the rules and that adding a clear reference to them would be appropriate. The motion to approve the rules with those changes was made and seconded, and the roll-call vote carried unanimously.

No public comments were recorded on these items and the commission moved on to subsequent agenda topics.
