At the June 28 meeting of the San Francisco Fire Commission, Finance Planning Director Mark Corso briefed commissioners on the department’s recent budget negotiations.
Corso said the department and the Budget Legislative Analyst initially discussed $1.3 million in possible cuts and that negotiations produced a $484,000 reduction. He said the majority of the savings were achieved through attrition and a small reduction in equipment — notably fewer sedan purchases — and that the adjustments should not have operational impact on frontline emergency services.
Corso gave the department’s first‑year allocation in the two‑year rolling budget as $511,768,691. He noted the budget discussion should wrap up in early August and warned of continued fiscal challenges ahead.
Commissioners asked Corso to confirm the numbers and thanked staff for preserving emergency frontline operations. Chief Janine Nicholson earlier told the commission the mayor and budget committee recognized the department’s public‑safety role in hearings.
The commission approved the meeting minutes earlier in the agenda; there were no formal budget votes recorded at this session. Corso said no major enhancements or new positions were granted in this round.
Next procedural steps: Corso said the budget discussion would continue through early August; the department will shift attention to planning for the following year after that point.
