Entertainment Commission approves Lions Den permit for Chinatown venue

The San Francisco Entertainment Commission approved a place-of-entertainment permit for Lions Den, a proposed nightclub and performance space at 57 Wentworth Place in Chinatown.

Applicants Cliff Benaye (investor/manager), Calvin Louie (community liaison) and general manager Harry Tom described outreach to nearly 200 nearby residents and businesses and submitted letters of support from Chinatown merchant groups and local chambers. Cliff Benaye said the venue aims to revive a historical performance space and host live bands, DJs, comedy and fashion events.

Staff told the commission the applicant had obtained required approvals and that Central Station added a condition requiring Lions Den to maintain its security system and make video footage available to SFPD and the Entertainment Commission in the event of an incident. Commissioners applauded the outreach and expressed support for revitalizing Chinatown nightlife.

Commissioner Wang moved for approval, a motion was seconded and the commission voted unanimously to grant the permit. Staff advised the applicants to follow up with department staff for next steps and permit conditions.

Next steps: applicants should coordinate with Entertainment Commission staff to implement permit conditions and with Public Safety/Police as required by Central Station.
