Commission approves Keyes Jazz Bistro permit after outreach and neighborhood support

The San Francisco Entertainment Commission voted Oct. 4 to approve a place-of-entertainment permit for Keyes Jazz Bistro at 498 Broadway, a proposed ticketed jazz supper-club that owner Simon Rowe said will host two set times and operate four nights a week initially.

"We're rolling up our sleeves and getting ready for action here and hoping that all is moving in the right direction for us to bring sophisticated jazz music back," Rowe said, describing outreach to the community and partnerships with local music nonprofits.

Deputy Director Azevedo told commissioners the applicant mailed 226 outreach letters (195 to residences, 13 to businesses, 18 to neighborhood groups) and included two letters of support in the commission packet; Central Station recommended one standard condition. Two public supporters — Mario Goneri and Stefano Casselado — spoke during public comment, praising the proposal as a step toward reviving neighborhood jazz venues.

Commissioners asked about programming and etiquette; Rowe said performances will emphasize listening (7 p.m. and 9 p.m. sets) and that tickets would be reasonably priced to maintain accessibility. After a motion and second, the commission voted to approve the permit with staff recommendations.

The commission encouraged the permit holder to follow up with staff about next steps for build-out and compliance with municipal conditions.
