Commission recommends landmark designation for Casa Sanchez, citing multigenerational cultural significance

The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously to recommend landmark designation for Casa Sanchez, a multigenerational family business on 20 Fourth Street, and will forward the recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.

Amy Beinart, legislative aide to Supervisor Hillary Ronan, told the commission that Supervisor Ronan “is enthusiastically in support” of the landmark recommendation. Planning Department staff described the property’s period of significance as 1968–2011, noted prior inclusion in the commission’s landmark program, and recommended that the commission forward the draft ordinance to the Board of Supervisors.

Anne Cervantes of the San Francisco Latino Historical Society underscored Casa Sanchez’s cultural importance and family history, saying the business has five generations involved in its operations and that its presence is closely connected to the Mission District’s Latino commercial life. Martha Sanchez, one of the family’s siblings, described the restaurant as the family’s and the neighborhood’s “living room.”

Commissioners praised the nomination as an example of the legacy-business and cultural-asset priorities the commission seeks to protect. Several commissioners urged incorporating oral histories and QR-code access to contextual materials. The motion to recommend landmark designation passed 7–0. The commission’s recommendation will be transmitted to the Board of Supervisors for final action.
