San Francisco commission adds eight long-running businesses to Legacy Business Registry

The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously on Thursday to add eight longtime local businesses to the city's Legacy Business Registry, a designation staff said recognizes firms with deep historical and neighborhood ties.

Staff presentations described each nominee's history and community role. Ryan Balbo urged the commission to accept Shears Beauty and Barber Shop as an African American, family-run business serving Bayview/Hunters Point for at least 72 years. Gigi Gunther and other planners summarized nominations for Button Down in Presidio Heights, Didi Boutique in Chinatown, Teben Company (restoration firm), Harris's Restaurant on Van Ness, Blue Danube Coffee House in the Inner Richmond, Biordi Art Imports in North Beach and BJ Grocery in Nob Hill. In each case staff recommended a resolution adding the business to the registry.

Owners and community representatives spoke in support. Marcus Tartt of the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center said, "This is a beacon in the community right now," urging approval of Shears Beauty and Barber Shop. BJ Grocery owner Anastasios Papelas described the store's family history and tourist recognition, noting the shop's film appearances.

Supervisor Peskin's office also signaled support: a representative said the supervisor prioritized funding and staffing for the legacy program during the recent budget cycle.

Commissioners praised the slate during deliberations, noting immigrant family histories and neighborhood contributions. Commissioner Johns moved to approve all nominations; the motion was seconded and carried 7-0. The commission recorded unanimous votes for each item.

The approved businesses are now eligible for the next steps in the Legacy Business Registry process. Staff said it will return with final paperwork to complete the designations.
