Commission adopts minutes; public raises concerns about Music Concourse observation wheel

The Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved draft minutes for its Oct. 6, 2021 meeting and received public comment urging enforcement of mitigation commitments for a temporary observation wheel sited in the Music Concourse.

During general public comment, Catherine Howard of San Franciscans for Urban Nature told the Commission she remains concerned that “the noise and fumes from the generator are still continuing and that not all mitigations, including those related to lighting, have been put in place,” and that loud music added to the wheel “is intrusive on the park atmosphere and should be turned off.” She said SFUN submitted a written letter with photos documenting these issues.

Rich Soucray, Deputy Director of Current Planning, responded that the Planning Department is researching compliance with the conditions of approval for the Ferris wheel and is corresponding with the Recreation and Park Department; he said staff will provide an update at a future meeting. The Commission did not take enforcement action in this hearing.

Separately, the Commission approved the draft minutes for Oct. 6, 2021 by motion and roll call. The clerk recorded seven yes votes and no opposition; the minutes adoption carried 7-0.
