The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission on Dec. 1, 2021 voted unanimously to recommend landmark designation for the Golden Gate Valley Carnegie Library at 1801 Green Street and to forward the recommendation to the Board of Supervisors with agreed amendments.
Planning staff presented Melanie Bishop’s report and consultant analysis, noting the building’s 1918 neoclassical design by architect Ernest Coxhead and its association with the Carnegie Library Grant Program. Bishop reviewed prior actions (a Nov. 3 initiation vote) and explained the revised list of proposed character-defining features for both the exterior (including terracotta cladding and ornamentation, clay tile roof, bronze entry doors and marble steps) and the interior (original wood doors, wood panel vestibule, marble finishes, ornamental ceiling and built-in shelving).
Consultant Bridget Maley spoke in support and suggested that staff consider updating character-defining lists for other Carnegie libraries to match current practice. Commissioners thanked staff and the consultant, noted that the draft summary should reflect the expanded features list, and moved to adopt the recommendation with amendments. The motion carried 7–0.
The Commission’s recommendation will be transmitted to the Board of Supervisors for consideration of formal landmark designation under the city’s designation procedures.
