Preservation commission adds racial and social equity language to its rules

San Francisco — The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission on Jan. 5 adopted an amendment to its rules and regulations to formally incorporate racial and social equity principles.

Chair read the proposed text into the record, adding a new section that states the commission "acknowledges the diverse population of the city and county of San Francisco and reaffirms its commitment to racial and social equity," recommends that the mayor nominate and the Board of Supervisors affirm members who reflect that diversity, and directs the planning department to ensure diverse voices have reasonable accommodations to participate in commission meetings.

The chair said the amendment is intended to satisfy phase 1 of the commission's racial and social equity plan and also fixes minor textual and grammatical errors in the rules. No public comment was received on the amendment.

A commissioner moved to adopt the change and the motion passed unanimously; the amendment will be incorporated into the commission's rules and staff will update the rule document accordingly.
