Commission recommends four long‑running businesses for Legacy Business Registry

The Historic Preservation Commission on May 4 recommended that four long-standing neighborhood businesses be added to San Francisco's Legacy Business Registry.

Planning staff presented nominations for Trattoria Contadina (a 38‑year family-owned Italian restaurant), Goat Hill Pizza (founded in 1975 and a Potrero Hill fixture), Glen Park Chiropractic (35 years under Dr. Andrew Sokolsky) and the San Francisco Microscopical Society (described in the staff packet as a 68‑year society). Staff said each business has contributed to neighborhood identity and community life and recommended adding them to the registry.

Representatives and owners spoke in favor. Ariel Waldman, president of the Microscopical Society, thanked the commission and described the group's public programming. "We are a community of explorers that come together to reveal the hidden wonders that are all around us," Waldman said. In public comment, the society's presentation noted a deeper historical lineage, with speakers referencing earlier roots dating to 1870; staff’s application language characterized the society differently, which staff and commissioners discussed as part of the nomination record.

Trattoria Contadina owner Kevin described his family's multigenerational operation and asked the commission to support the nomination; Goat Hill Pizza supporters and founders likewise emphasized the pizzeria's neighborhood role since 1975; Dr. Andrew Sokolsky described 35 years of service at Glen Park Chiropractic.

Commissioners praised the range of businesses and their community contributions, and a motion to adopt the staff recommendations for all four nominations passed unanimously (7-0). The commission will forward the nominations to the Small Business Commission/appropriate review process for final registry action.
