Commission adopts Modernistic Styles historic context statement (1925–1965)

The Historic Preservation Commission on Feb. 15 adopted a citywide historic context statement covering Modernistic architectural styles from about 1925 through 1965.

Elena Morrigan, planning staff, described the document’s scope and intent: identify character‑defining features of Art Deco, Streamline Moderne and International styles; provide evaluative frameworks and integrity thresholds; and offer consistent guidance for surveys and property evaluations. Morrigan illustrated the framework with examples including a 1936 mixed‑use Art Deco building at 5401 Mission Street, a 1946 Streamline Moderne example at 3620 Fifth Street, and a 1938 residence at 2129–30 Second Avenue that has lost key character‑defining features through alterations.

Commissioners praised the report’s clarity and the illustrative visuals. A motion to adopt the context statement passed unanimously; adoption will guide staff and public review in future evaluations of modernistic‑era resources.
