The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously on Jan. 17, 2024 to suspend routine remote public comment, allowing exceptions for disability or other reasonable accommodations.
During discussion commissioners noted that the Planning Commission and most other city boards had followed a mayoral directive to discontinue routine remote testimony. Supporters said returning to in‑person hearings encourages civic engagement and clearer public participation. Commissioner Foley said the commission should "continue to make reasonable accommodations" while otherwise encouraging in‑person attendance. The motion, as moved and seconded, directed staff to suspend routine remote public comment but to provide accommodations for those who request them for mobility or other access reasons.
The motion passed without opposition, 6–0. Staff and commissioners said they will continue to provide accommodations by request and will allow staff presenters to make in‑person presentations, while some technical or supporting staff may join remotely when necessary.
The suspension applies to routine remote phone or WebEx public comment; staff noted procedures to request accommodation and to call in for testimony remain available when needed.
