Kaiser Permanente reports sympathy strikes; says core services will remain open

Kate Ferrante, a Kaiser Permanente representative, briefed the board Nov. 18 on recent labor activity affecting Northern California facilities. Ferrante said Kaiser reached agreements with dozens of unions and secured three-year contracts in many markets, but some sympathy strikes and a continuing operating-engineers strike (Local 39) have disrupted outpatient operations in select locations.

Ferrante said Kaiser deployed contingent workers and clinical managers to maintain services, rescheduled or converted many nonurgent appointments to phone or video visits, and prioritized keeping vaccination clinics open. She cautioned that some outpatient pharmacies were temporarily closed and that Kaiser relied on retail-pharmacy arrangements to fill urgent prescriptions. Ferrante characterized the labor actions as evolving and said bargaining continued with unsettled unions.

Board members asked about vaccine-clinic continuity and pharmacy access; Ferrante said vaccination sites were prioritized to remain open and that contingency plans were in place to minimize member impact. The board recorded no public callers on this item and moved on to adjournment.
