Health Commission approves naming ZSFG roadway 'David J. Sanchez Way'

The San Francisco Health Commission voted unanimously on Dec. 6 to designate the new roadway between Building 5 and the UCSF Research and Academic Building on the ZSFG campus as "David J. Sanchez Way," honoring the late commissioner and community leader.

Secretary Morwitz read the resolution, which noted Dr. Sanchez's 22-year tenure on the Health Commission after his 1997 appointment and his long service at UCSF and with San Francisco civic organizations. The resolution recounted his roles chairing key committees, mentoring fellow commissioners and strengthening links between UCSF, ZSFG and the community.

Commissioners moved and seconded the resolution and took public comment in support. Alyssa Matross told commissioners she wanted “to honor David Sanchez and his family,” and Patrick Monette Shaw recalled Sanchez’s role in securing annual aggregate discharge data and urged broader governance reforms including term limits. Several commissioners offered personal remembrances: Vice President Green said Sanchez’s mentorship eased her early years on the commission; Commissioner Chow and others recalled his deep ties to Mission Street communities and public service.

Secretary Morwitz called the roll and recorded unanimous approval. President Bernal expressed the commission’s appreciation and noted Sanchez’s family watched the vote virtually.

Outcome: The resolution was approved and will memorialize Dr. Sanchez on the ZSFG campus roadway connecting Building 5 and the Research and Academic Building. No amendments were recorded in the meeting minutes; the motion passed by roll call.
