ZSFG’s FY21–22 annual report highlights vaccinations, care volumes and building progress

Doctor Susan Ehrlich, CEO of Zuckerberg San Francisco General, presented the hospital’s FY21–22 annual report on Dec. 6, telling the Health Commission that ZSFG served more than 100,000 people during the year — roughly 20% of the city's population — and underscoring the hospital’s role as a regional trauma and 24/7 psychiatric emergency resource.

Ehrlich highlighted vaccination activity: ZSFG reported 69,000 public COVID vaccinations during the year and, if staff vaccinations and additional public vaccination events are included, more than a quarter‑million vaccinations since the pandemic began. She also reviewed the hospital’s revenue mix, noting that the majority of funding comes from Medi‑Cal and Medicare and that under 10% of the budget was funded by the city general fund in 2021.

The report covered campus construction and research partnerships: UCSF’s Research and Academic Building (externally appearing complete) will house research faculty being relocated from older campus buildings. The SFGH Foundation’s fundraising efforts were also cited (roughly $280 million raised since 1993, with $12 million in equity/innovation grants distributed).

Commissioners and public commenters praised staff and asked for additional reporting on pediatric hospitalizations and long‑term outcomes. No formal action was taken on the annual report itself (it was presented as an information item); related action items later in the agenda — including environment of care and patient-safety policies — were moved, seconded and approved by the commission.

Outcome: The annual report was presented and discussed; commissioners expressed gratitude and requested follow-up data in areas including pediatric hospitalizations and RSV trends.
