Hobbs Schools report shows 18% chronic absenteeism at 40 days; enrollment down slightly from last year

District staff presented the 40-day attendance and accountability reports. The 40-day attendance data showed district-wide chronic absenteeism at about 18% (defined as missing more than 10% of days to date). Presenters explained how the percentage is calculated (number of chronically absent students versus enrollment) and noted the figure changes as the school year progresses.

Staff reported 40-day membership as 1,064 and that enrollment is down roughly 119 students compared with last year's 40-day count and down about 100 students since the end of the previous school year. Presenters said some changes reflect family moves out of town and cohort differences between recent kindergarten classes and graduating classes. Coronado Elementary was cited as an example on NMVISTAS with 59.7 points; specific proficiency values were noted (Coronado math proficiency 39%, reading 46%, science 31%).

Board members asked about comparisons to the prior year and the effect of an election day holiday (Nov. 4), which staff said caused a noticeable drop in attendance in early November that reduced the number of students eligible for perfect attendance. Staff said they would share more detailed analysis with the executive team and PED.
