The Oct. 16 Forest Hills Board of Education meeting included two community-focused presentations.
Dr. David Simpson, principal of Northern Hills Middle School, described the Husky Heroes program, which asks families and students to nominate veterans connected to the school; students create personalized thank-you cards and learn about Veterans Day and service. "Each stroke of a marker, each word written on these cards represents a moment of reflection of the bravery and selflessness that our veterans have shown," Simpson said.
Tracy Kranka, an eighth-grade U.S. history teacher at Northern Hills, shared veteran responses, read excerpts of thank-you letters and described classroom practices used to teach empathy and intergenerational connection. Kranka noted the program’s positive impact on students and veterans, citing dozens of nominations and tangible responses from veterans who saved cards and wrote back.
Board members then recognized National Merit commended scholars and semifinalists from Central, Eastern and Northern High Schools. Principals introduced students by name and invited them to receive certificates and parental recognition. Board recessed briefly afterward to allow families to leave.
No policy or fiscal decision resulted from these presentations; they were informational and celebratory.
