The Fountain Hills Unified School board voted to award the contract to Continental Flooring Company to redo the middle school gym floor after reviewing three competitive bids and contractor analysis.
During the meeting, a facilities representative described the procurement: six vendors were contacted, five visited the site and three submitted quotes. One low bid proposed installing a new floating floor over the existing surface — a method described by a contractor and the district’s external reviewer as an acceptable, cost-saving option if confirmed on site.
A local general contractor who reviewed the proposals said the approach was “appropriate” and endorsed the low bidder while noting typical risks during floor demolition and the need to verify details such as door clearances and ADA-sensitive thresholds. The superintendent asked the board to approve the low bid contingent on final conversations between Mr. Harris (district facilities) and district administration to ensure all technical items are addressed.
Board President (unnamed) moved the contract award; the motion passed on a voice vote.
The district said the chosen approach could reduce cost by roughly $10,000 compared with a full demo-and-replace approach, but contractors warned that unknown adhesive or subfloor conditions could create additional exposure once work begins. The board requested an in-person meeting with the vendor’s installer and management before finalizing specifications, and the administration agreed to return with any required clarifications.
Next steps: district staff will complete final technical discussions with the recommended vendor and return to the board (or proceed per the contingency language) with contract documents and a timeline for installation.
